The song starts with a young woman talking to her mother, telling her to ask her auntie (ਤਾਈ, father’s elder brother’s wife) to stop looking for grooms for her. It’s a roundabout way to coming to the point - mother, I have met my man.

The young woman overjoyed with love for this man goes on to tell her mother about how nice of a guy he is. He is a well-mannered man who respects my honour and appreciates you for raising me well. He is truly an honourable man himself because he doesn’t want to play games with me or meet me in hiding. He wants to come over to our house and ask for my hand in marriage from you! I can’t keep it to myself anymore, she says, even though he asked me to keep our love (his gift to her) a secret. ↩︎

The song ends with the woman swooning over her man. She says that not only has he stolen her heart, he took her “beauty mark” (the mole under her left eye) as well. This is metaphorical imagery (obviously) because a beauty mark is a symbol of beauty, love and charm - something the woman would hold dear to her. And the man’s taken it from her along with her heart, and she can’t help but fall even more in love with him. ↩︎
